Red Crossbill - Loxia curvirostra

Red Crossbill - Loxia curvirostra

Its name means "with a curved beak" and this is not the case, it is the main feature that distinguishes the Red Crossbill. As for their sexual deformity, there are different thoughts. The texts report that the male is red and the green female, although some believe that a safer way when talking about captive breeding animals is that of color in the under-beak or throat. In the case of the male the color of the chest must touch the beak while in the female it fades to white, and the part of the throat is precisely white. The fact remains that these colors in nature are very accentuated for their feeding while in aviary it is sometimes more difficult to reach it due to lack of sun.

Breeding: the
Red Crossbill, like all the others where the colors are the masters, must be raised in well lit rooms with natural light. It is important to note that this beautiful bird has been reproducing in the wild since January, despite the very low temperatures and snow.

Feeding: the preferred seed in nature is the pine nut, which with its curved beak manages to pull out of the pine cones with great ease and mastery, also does not disdain also berries and green pine cones. For our breeding couples we can find excellent mixtures on the market.
